“The aim of the Cornish Global Migration Programme is to compile a comprehensive picture of the Cornish global migration worldwide. To achieve this, your help is needed by filling in one of the questionnaires with as much detail as is possible. Please feel free to fill this in on-screen and attach it to anemail or send a paper copy to our postal address. For email attachments, please rename the Word document by adding your name e.g. questionnaire2009JohnSmith.doc or questionnaire2009SusanBrown.doc.
Sending us a completed questionnaire will be helping to make sense of one of the most complex and important chapters in Cornish history. Copies of letters, diaries, newspaper cuttings, photographs of migrants, MIs or places abroad are warmly welcomed. The project depends entirely on any information that is given, however sketchy it is. The Cornish Global Migration Programmewelcomes any contributions to make this a living memory.
The Cornish Global Migration Programme is run by a dedicated group of volunteers who ensure that the information given is readily available.
From the information received, the Cornish Global Migration Programme is able to link families around the world with common ancestors. The programme is supported by Cornish associations worldwide and at home, as well as many institutions in Cornwall.
The Cornish Global Migration Programme is funded solely by and dependent on public donation. All cheques to be made out to Cornish Global Migration Programme and sent to our contact address.”
The director of the CGMP is Mike Kiernan, MCWM, M.Sc. He is hard at work trying to increase the visibility and support for the CGMP.
In looking at their Summer 2011 paper, titled “Looking Back & Our Way Forward” I learned a lot about this interesting initiative.
First, they are all volunteer and they need support! So if you are Cornish, or wish you were, give it a look! Personally, I am mailing a gift today.
Second, they have done an amazing amount of work, espeically for a volunteer group! Started just in 1991, they have always had an eye on quality and usability of their data. Operating under the banner of the Management Committee (a registered not-for-profit in the UK) they already have more than 50,000 records! As of May 19, 2011 they had 59,723 records. I know it is more than that as the figure is from May and I have sent in some of my ancestors already 
One of the exciting items is that the CGMP has expanded in the Murcoch House (by the way is the fellow who invented steam locomotion and gas lighting for indoor uses) to the Fox Room, which is becoming a small museum and archive for the use of visitors! What a deal!
I found it interesting to note that the CGMP was most likely the first dedicated effort in the world to create an ongoing database study of a regionalized migration experience. Great to see them at the forefront tracing our Cornish Cousins worldwide!
I am continuing to work with Mike and will give updates and reports on the efforts and progress of the CGMP.
